Where's oatmeal from? Seed-to-Spoon recap

If you follow Street Smart Nutrition, you know I've been all over oats this year! Quaker and I collaborated to share my favorite oat recipes and nutrition information.

The 2019 Seed to Spoon tour at their Cedar Rapids mill helped me understand where oats come from. It was one of my coolest experiences, and I can't wait to tell you about it!

Much of Quaker's oats are farmed in Canada. The climate is perfect for growing oats and yielding well. Oats thrive in cold, bright, well-drained soil and long, sunny days.

Many farmers rotate crops with oats. Quaker is happy to collaborate with over 400 Direct Growers Program oat farmers who grow high-quality oats.

The Cedar Rapid Quaker mill is best visited in September because oats are harvested in late summer or early fall. Cedar Rapids is full of train whistles because oats are shipped by rail!

Farmers give oat samples for testing before exporting, and Quaker's rigorous requirements need testing again at the mill. Labs grade a railcar sample from each. These operators examine samples for moisture, size, and composition, which must be approved before oats can be shipped.
